Trip & Kacey, Bringing Home Baby

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I had the biggest pleasure slipping into Trip and Kacey’s beautiful home and capturing some truly precious moments for them of their early days with sweet baby Margaret. I watched them ohhh and ahhh over their sweet girl as we hummed to lullabies by JJ Heller and I carried them through their session. I loved their fascination with their wee girl, the way they were captivated by every yawn and sigh and grin. How many times did Kacey say, “Oh gosh, Trip. Look at her!” And I kept thinking the same thing. ‘Look at her! She is perfect!”

I sat down next to a woman at the Y this week, we were both feeding our babies and commiserating about the whole thing that is pregnancy. The exhaustion and the pain, the way we had both been stretched and torn and wounded from carrying our precious people. This beautiful and wonderfully loving momma, said what so many mommas feel during the wounding work they are doing, “In the middle, I wondered if it was worth it… and then she was here, and in my arms, and I knew I would do it again and again and again for her.”

“I loved her instantly. Of course, most parents love their children instantly. But I mention it here because I still find it a remarkable thing. Where was the love before? Where did you acquire it from? The way it is suddenly there, total and complete, as sudden as grief, but in reverse, is one of the wonders about being human.” —Matt Haig, How to Stop Time

Brian + Emily Fresh 48

I am a puddle, on the floor, for Brian and Emily and their precious kiddos. I am so thankful for the years of friendship, and prayer, and potty training advice between us. It was an honor to capture these early hours with their sweet Ebba Rose.

Brian and Emily, such big congratulations! We are praying peace over these first days and weeks as you transition to being a party of five. Five looks so good on you all. Like so good.

Dirk & Brittany

This couple. You all. This couple. They invited me into their delivery room last week, and the work they did together was breathtaking, and difficult, and brave and exhausting and culminated in the birth of their precious daughter. Brittany's labor was a marathon... a marathon run without sleep and with only applesauce and broth for fuel. Unbelievably fierce and somehow also graceful in the midst of her labor. And Dirk was by her side for each contraction, holding her hand and her heart. It was a privilege to stand in the background and witness the tenderness and the strength that he poured over his sweet wife.

Oh how I would have loved to have captured their wee babe's birth, but Dirk and Brittany were so gracious when things got a little complicated within my own family.

Dirk & Brittany- Wave upon wave of blessings on your family and your precious daughter. We are praying peace over your home and your hearts during the chaotic newborn season. It was an honor to capture your labor and bear witness to the beautiful and brave work you all did together. It was an even greater honor to sit beside you and hold your hand when the time for pictures was over.

Well done, you two. Just really, really well done!
